Buiten broedtijd
In de winter komen Grote Lijsters minder verspreid voor dan in de broedtijd. Dat is het duidelijkst te merken in Noord- en West-Nederland. Streng winterweer leidt tot enige verplaatsingen. De voorjaarstrek begint tussen eind februari (zachte winters) of half maart (lang aanhoudend koud winterweer) en duurt voort tot eind april. Vanaf eind juni vormen zich groepen van tientallen Grote Lijsters op voedselrijke plekken. De najaarstrek speelt zich tussen half september en begin oktober af, met de meeste trek in de eerste helft van oktober.
Broedtijd
Grote Lijsters ontbreken alleen in grote open en bijna boomloze gebieden in West- en Noord-Nederland, en zijn schaars in stedelijk gebied. De kleinschalige landschappen en bosrijke delen van de hogere zandgronden zijn het dichtst bezet. Rond 1930 was de Grote Lijster alleen in enkele delen van het land een (schaarse) broedvogel. De vestiging en uitbreiding elders hielden ruim een halve eeuw aan. Inzinkingen in de stand traden op na winters waarbij strenge vorst tot diep in Zuidwest-Europa doordrong. Sinds ongeveer 1995 nemen de landelijke aantallen gestaag af. Het verlies van voedselgebieden zal daarbij meespelen: op de hoge gronden zijn vele graslanden verdroogd of omgezet in maïs.

Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Mistle Thrush.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Mistle Thrush in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Zang (zowel vanaf zangpost als in vlucht), aanwezig paar (let speciaal op agressie jegens kraaichtigen en roofvogels of alarm voor mensen, met harde ratelroep), nestbouw (door wijfje), transport van voedsel of uitwerpselpakketje (beide partners).
LET OP: Zangplekken binnen territorium kunnen honderden meters uiteen liggen (maar blijken vaak wel frequent te worden gebruikt). Afstand wordt soms zwijgzaam, soms zingend overbrugd. Foerageren kan plaatsvinden ver buiten het territorium (foeragerende vogel zegt dus niets, maar volg vogel met voedsel in de snavel: vliegt rechtstreeks naar nest). Zang van verre hoorbaar en precieze plek soms moeilijk te traceren; vogel zelf in boomtop door kenmerkend profiel echter goed herkenbaar (en voer anders kruispeiling uit).
Bijzonderheden
Nest (in boom, vrijwel altijd op geëxponeerde plek) vooral in het vroege voorjaar vaak relatief eenvoudig te vinden. Paren met uitgevlogen jongen sluiten zich vaak bij elkaar aan. Dergelijke groepen treden van de nazomer tot in de herfst op en zeggen niets over broedgevallen ter plaatse. Paren met jongen alleen meetellen als de jongen nog (zeer) korte staartjes hebben.
Broedbiologie
Broedt in bosgebieden (enige voorkeur voor naaldhout) en agrarisch cultuurland met bosjes of lanen. Eileg van half maart tot in juni, piek in april. Een tot twee broedsels per jaar, meestal 4 eieren, broedduur 13-15 dagen, nestjongenperiode 12-15 dagen, uitgevlogen jongen worden nog 12-15 dagen verzorgd.
